The Samsung 990 Evo Plus: perfect for notebooks
by Kevin Hofer

Which is the right Samsung SSD for you? This overview will help you with your purchase decision.
Samsung's top model has been on the market since the beginning of 2025. The PCIe 5.0 standard offers write and read rates of up to 13400 MB/s and 14700 MB/s - around twice as fast as the fastest PCIe 4.0 SSDs. A compatible mainboard is required to actually utilise these transfer rates. Here is the link to our detailed test.
Available with and without heat sink:
Since its release in autumn 2022, the 990 Pro has been at the top of the rankings. High speed and the well-known Samsung reliability convince our customers. Also available with heatsink, which qualifies it for use in the PS5.
The 990 Pro is also available with and without heatsink:
The EVO Plus is located in the upper mid-range. Multimedia and gaming PCs benefit from the high read speed of up to 7250 MB/s. Here is the link to our test.
The EVO without «Plus» is overshadowed by the faster 990 EVO Plus. This SSD may soon disappear from the portfolio in some markets.
This entry-level SSD still runs with the slightly older PCI 3.0 standard. 1 TB is the largest capacity available. With a read rate of up to 3500 MB/s, it is still relatively fast.
This SATA SSD was introduced in January 2021 and still holds its own in the top ranks. Thanks to TLC (Triple-Level Cell) NAND, the 870 EVO is faster, more durable and offers better performance during intensive write operations than the 870 QVO.
The affordable 870 QVO is suitable for a quick data grab or as little to medium-used storage.
