Trailer Tuesday: His Dark Materials, Birds of Prey and Terminator 6

A long «Terminator: Dark Fate» trailer lets us take a deep look into the tonality of this upcoming movie. HBO reveals a lot about the world of «His Dark Materials» and Margot Robbie takes on the role of Harley Quinn once again. Plus a fantastic «1917» trailer and the hilarious «Free Guy».
If you spent the last rainy weekend relaxing in spa, enjoying a trip to the cinema or gaming, you've come to the right place. This is your chance to catch up on the best trailers you shouldn’t miss out on. Welcome to this week’s Trailer Tuesday.
Terminator: Dark Fate
That's something unusual: a trailer in English but with Spanish voice-over narration. Why? Because the main character has Andalusian roots. Very nice. I enjoy seeing trailer producers try something new and not copy each other all the time (need I say more than: the braaam).
The action sequences look good. The return of Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor is promising. And Arnie's there, too. But somehow I can't get rid of the feeling of being told the same Terminator story again and again. A good Terminator and a bad Terminator – and one person who must survive and be protected at all costs, otherwise the robot apocalypse will break loose. Ta-dah!
I hope Terminator creator James Cameron who acted as producer and co-writer came up with more than a recycled version of what we already know.
Release date in Swiss cinemas: 1 November 2019
His Dark Materials
In 2007, there was already an attempt to turn the novels «His Dark Materials» into a movie. The outcome was titled «The Golden Compass» and, despite the star cast such as Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, the film caused mixed reactions. Especially because some decisive and gloomy moments of the books were changed to make the movie more child-friendly. Director Chris Weitz later blamed the studio and described the whole experience as «terrible».
Plans to continue the planned trilogy fell through. HBO has now made another attempt to adapt the popular books. This time, the result is a series. The trailer looks fantastic indeed – and it proves that the series won't shy away from showing dark scenes. That's staying true to the creator Philip Pullman who once said about «His Dark Materials» that they're adult books that should also be read by children.
Start date: 4 November 2019, HBO
Birds of Prey
Although «Suicide Squad» is considered one of the biggest movie flops in the recent history of Warner Bros. and DC, one character has gained incredible popularity: Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie).
Now the character is getting her own film: «Birds of Prey». The first trailer, however, seems a bit bland. Sure, Margot Robbie is great at playing Harley Quinns, but I'm afraid she might again end up being the only positive note in an otherwise very generic movie that nobody will remember in a few years' time.
Release date in Swiss cinemas: 7 February 2020
1917
1917, World War I. A war that started with horses and carriages and ended with tanks: the beginning of modern war. Sam Mendes, the director of «James Bond: Skyfall» took on the project and gave it a very special twist: «1917» will play in real time.
And there’s more: to support the feeling that as much time will pass during the story in the film as in the cinema you’re in, there will be no visible cuts. It will seem to you as if the entire film is one continuous shot. This is shown in a recently published behind-the-scenes clip.
I can't help but be incredibly curious.
Release date in Swiss cinemas: 10 January 2020
Free Guy
Ryan Reynolds and Taika Waititi: their latest film is about a bank teller (Reynolds) who discovers he's actually an NPC – a non-player character – in an MMORPG called «Free City». And the game is taken offline soon.
There's no real trailer, but something better: Reynolds and Waititi, who deny ever having worked together before. Although we all know about the notorious flop in their career...
Release date in Swiss cinemas: 3 July 2020
