Trailer Tuesday: Jungle Cruise, Beastie Boys Story and Altered Carbon

Netflix hopefully won't experience a train wreck with «Altered Carbon: Resleeved». Pixar's «Soul» looks more promising. But I’m most excited about the documentary on the history of the Beastie Boys – told by the Beastie Boys.

In this week's Trailer Tuesday:

  • «Altered Carbon: Resleeved», launch date: 19 March 2020, Netflix
  • «Beastie Boys Story», launch date: 2 April 2020, AppleTV+
  • «Jungle Cruise», cinema release: 24 July 2020
  • «Connected», cinema release: 18 September 2020
  • «Soul»,, cinema release: 19 June 2020

Altered Carbon: Resleeved

Netflix has a problem. An obsession I just don’t get. Or are you actually keen on anime movies that look like a cheap video game?

Netflix gave us a first taste with the «Ghost in the Shell» series, which starts in April. In fact, the «Altered Carbon: Resleeved» trailer even features: «From the writers of ‘Ghost in the Shell’» – which probably refers more to the Netflix production than to Masamune Shirow's manga from 1989. Sadly.

Release date: 19 March 2020, Netflix

Beastie Boys Story

A «Beastie Boys» documentary that shows the actual Beastie Boys tell their own story – almost 40 years after the band came together. How cool is that?

In case the name doesn't ring a bell: the «Beastie Boys» aren’t just any band. They’re the band that paved the way for hip hop to become commercially successful – together with Run-D.M.C. In fact, they went on tour together, although the Beastie Boys’ roots are in punk rock. That's where the unusual but unique crossovers come from.

In my opinion, this is a must-see documentary.

Launch date: 2 April 2020, AppleTV+

Soul

I like Pixar stories. Especially those that aren't a sequel, sequel, prequel or spin-off of anything. And that's a rarity in low-risk/high-rewards Hollywood.

Yet, it's films such as «Ratatouille», «Wall-E» or «Inside Out» that stand out with incredibly original ideas and, on paper, quite risky stories. Who would have thought that a film about a rat that's a chef, a lonely robot or abstract emotional worlds in a girl's head could make for such heartwarming and gripping stories?

«Soul» is just like that: Jazz music teacher Joe Gardner (Jamie Foxx) is apparently dead. But, without wanting to, his soul ends up in the «great before». This is where souls are born, matched with a personality and sent to earth. Exactly where Joe wants to return to.

Jungle Cruise

The first franchise based on a Disneyland attraction of the same name is «Pirates of the Caribbean». «Jungle Cruise» is the next one.

The attraction at the amusement park sees guests cruising on a boat through an elaborately recreated Amazon and encounter all kinds of flora and fauna – piranhas, crocodiles, hippos and so on.

What about the movies? It shows Frank (Dwayne Johnson) cruise through the Amazon in his boat, taking guests on what he promises them to be the «cheapest, but most exciting boat trip» ever. Just like in an amusement park, the lurking dangers are by no means real – but the guests don't know this. One day, Lily Houghton (Emily Blunt) shows up. She believes to know there’s a tree in the Amazon that carries fruits with miraculous healing powers. Together with Frank, she sets out to find this tree. Only now there are real dangers.

Release date in Swiss cinemas: 24 July 2020

Connected

I really like the beginning of the trailer: there is a father who once had an inseparable connection to his little daughter. But she's growing older, developing and is no longer the little girl she used to be. To make matters worse, there are those annoying smartphones, tablets and other things that distract from real life. The family decides to go on a road trip without any technological gadgets to bring the family back together.

The style of animation is great. Unsurprisingly, as Sony Pictures Animation’s Lego films and especially «Into the Spider-Verse» was evidence that the Californians are also talented artists. The anticipation rises...

...until the «helperbot» suddenly disobeys orders and goes crazy. I really didn't see that coming. What a crazy twist. And unnecessary. My anticipation? Back to zero.

Release date in Swiss cinemas: 18 September 2020
