Trailer Tuesday: Tenet, Messiah and A Quiet Place 2

Netflix' «Messiah» is sure to be the controversy of the year. Amazon is trying out the «The Boys» formula on Nazis. Horror fans are getting «A Quiet Place: Part 2» and «The New Mutants». Christopher Nolan's new film «Tenet» seems really mysterious.

All right, enough celebrating. After a two-week Christmas and New Year's break, Trailer Tuesday returns – with the best trailers that have emerged into the world of cinema and series over the holidays.

Messiah

Oh, here's a show that has the makings for controversy. Imagine if the Messiah actually showed up. Performing miracles that cannot be explained. No one can prove that he is the Son of God incarnate. But neither that he isn't. How would the world react to this?

How would you react?

What a daring concept. Provocative. An uncomfortable question. There is prejudiced distrust on the part of unbelievers, but also delusional fatalism on the part of the faithful. Through social media rumours and legitimate information, the man who claims to be the second coming of Jesus gains fame and followers. It triggers a global movement. But whether it's good or bad is up to us to decide.

Start date: 1 January 2020, Netflix

Hunters

A boy who has yet to mature into a man (Greg Austin) loses a loved one. Killed. An old, strange man (Al Pacino) visits him and offers him revenge. That's what the boy would get if he joined this man's group. They're a strange bunch: they take the law into their own hands and every member is an expert on something forbidden.

Sounds like «The Boys»?

It's not. In «Hunters» the superheroes are Nazis and the Boys are Nazi hunters. Moreover, the whole thing is set in 1970s New York and is supposed to be based on true events. What’s more: Jordan Peele, director of «Get Out» und «Us», is the executive producer.

Nice.

Start date: 21. February 2020, Amazon Prime Video

A Quiet Place: Part 2

A game changer. That's what 2018's «A Quiet Place» was. The film made John Krasinski, whom many only know as a lovable goof from the cult series «The Office», an action star. At the same time, the film unleashed a tidal wave of similarly knitted horror flicks in which protagonists aren't allowed to make any noise. Unless they want to die. Netflix's «Birdbox» for instance.

Krasinski, who not only stood in front of the camera during the first part, but also wrote the script and directed, will also direct the second part. That's good news to fans. The trailer? Looks good, although not quite as «quiet» as the first part.

Release date in Swiss cinemas: 19 March 2020

The New Mutants

Ah, so it still exists, the X-Men horror spin-off featuring Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams. I say this because «The New Mutants» was originally supposed to have been released on April 12, 2018. Then the start was postponed. Again and again. The last time because of Disney's 71.8 billion dollar mega takeover of 20th Century Fox in March 2019.

But the premise of the film sounds exciting. Because while Charles Xavier's school for mutants is something like heaven on earth, the «hospital» in which the new mutants are supposed to be treated is pure hell. No wonder: Mutant powers have always been portrayed as something cool in previous movies, but actually... actually they can be pretty scary, too.

Release date in Swiss cinemas: 3 April 2020

Tenet

There it is again. Christopher Nolan and his preference for non-linear storytelling. We've seen it in Memento, The Prestige, Dunkirk. Time also plays an important role in «Inception» or «Interstellar». Nolan loves to use time as a stylistic element in his films.

«Tenet» will be no exception. As the trailer suggests that the story tells the beginning and end at the same time. As if the action is heading towards the middle from both sides. To the centre. Like the title – it can also be read from both sides.

«Don’t try to understand it. Feel it,» says a female voice in the trailer.

Release date in Swiss cinemas: 17. July 2020

I'm an outdoorsy guy and enjoy sports that push me to the limit – now that’s what I call comfort zone! But I'm also about curling up in an armchair with books about ugly intrigue and sinister kingkillers. Being an avid cinema-goer, I’ve been known to rave about film scores for hours on end. I’ve always wanted to say: «I am Groot.»
