Zinc-air hearing aid batteries for cochlear implants have a particularly high energy density and provide an almost horizontal discharge curve for optimal power supply.

The air holes of the battery are initially covered with a protective film, keeping it in a dormant state until needed. The self-discharge rate of zinc-air batteries with the protective film is only about 3% per year. The film is removed when inserting the battery into the hearing aid. After a few seconds of activation time, the battery begins to discharge. In the activated state (protective film removed), zinc-air batteries have a limited shelf life and should be used as soon as possible.
