The cable is only for charging, the trackball also works during charging. However, the battery lasts a very long time.

One is sufficient if you plug it into the PC to be operated, or if you can switch the USB connection (e.g. because the receiver is plugged into a KVM switch or similar).
This instability can be avoided by occasionally cleaning the ball and the housing in which the ball is embedded. See also the manufacturer's operating instructions.
Work faster 😉 Sounds like Windows and power saving to me, maybe you have to switch off in the power settings that Bluetooth devices may be deactivated?
