The cable harness offered here is needed when connecting SATA drives to specific RAID controller cards. Often, the expansion cards have one or more sockets for connectors of the type SFF8643, also known as Mini-SAS. The advantage of this interface is that electrical signals from up to four SATA (6G) hard drives or SSDs can be transmitted over this single connection. Frequently, there is not enough space on the circuit boards of the RAID controller cards to solder as many SATA ports as can be controlled by the controller.
