A shutdown procedure utilizes the fact that the voltage (Delta U) slightly decreases when the batteries are fully charged. The temperature of the batteries is monitored during the charging process. If the temperature exceeds a certain value, the device automatically shuts off. After the charging process is complete, a low maintenance charge continues to flow to prevent self-discharge of the batteries. Defective cells are not charged, thus preventing damage to the charger. There is detection of faulty, unsuitable, or incorrectly inserted battery types. A safety timer shuts off after a certain period, regardless of the charging status.
