The Blu-ray discs are named after the Blue Laser technology. The shorter laser wavelength leads to a blue light beam. While DVD media is read at 650 nm wavelength using Red Laser technology, the blue laser has a wavelength of 405 nm.
The advantage of a blue laser with a shorter wavelength is that smaller data bits can be written, increasing the amount of data on the disc.
