(before i am mistaken for blind or stupid, yes, i know, it is a product for the 5th generation of the ipad pros, i know that). So, I'm wondering why I can't use this case with a 4th generation ipad? The two devices have a lot in common, don't they?

Hmm, the two are not quite identical in construction. One is a little thicker than the other and therefore the cover does not fit both. See the "Dimensions" section:
