The SmartLav+ is designed to connect to smartphones; if you want to connect it to a camera, you need the adapter.
There are 2 types of 3.5mm jack plug:
Tip-Ring-Sleeve (TRS) and Tip-Ring-Ring-Sleeve (TRRS).
In the past, all computers had a 3.5mm microphone input and a 3.5mm headphone output. Now they only have a combined input and output. This is only possible because of the additional ring on the plug.
If you want to plug a device designed for smartphones or laptops (TRRS) into a slot that only expects one input (microphone slot on audio recorders, cameras), you need an adapter.
