Can the HU85 also be placed closer and thus reduce the size to 80 inches ? Will the picture remain sharp ? Or is 90 inches a must ?

The problem may be the connecting cables. At 90 inches, the projector is 56mm from the screen. That is just enough to avoid kinking the power, HDMI and other cables. With smaller screen diagonals it might be difficult or impossible.
