can you use the second monitor as an extended monitor like in windows or just clone mode?

Yes, it works. This has less to do with the cable than with the settings in the Mac operating system. See https://support.apple.com/de-ch...

The following instructions from the above page are important:

To set up an extended desktop:
Connect your additional display and turn it on.
From the Apple () menu, select System Preferences.
Select "Monitors".
Click on the "Arrange" tab.
Make sure that the option "Synchronise screens" is deactivated.
