Does anyone know why my iPad does not switch on and off automatically when I open or close the cover? Do I have to activate or configure this somewhere? Thank you for your help.

You have to switch this on. Go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Enable Lock and Unlock (must be green).

Then it should work without any problems.
