Question about Sony HT-A9
Does anyone use this who also has a TV with only ARC connection? Is this recommended at all or should you at least have eARC?

the unit supports ARC and E-ARC.

I use it without eArc and everything runs perfectly. eArc is 100% backwards compatible in my experience.
