I can't play DVDs or Bluerays. I doubt that I need the "Nero Media Home Package" for this, but I certainly don't want a subscription model just to be able to play CDs. Does anyone have any idea why this doesn't work?

Yes, unfortunately this is the case with Windows, but also with MacOs and Linux. Under Windows, you need player or burning software to be able to play DVDs and Blu-rays with a Blu-ray player or burner. Nero Media Home should work, but there are others. Just try the search engine.
