I have my external hard drive with 8TB as a film database (4.5TB are occupied). Why is it that with my 6-year-old MacBook Air (i5, 8GB, 128GB) I only have to wait 15 seconds via the USB port to open this huge folder and with my new MacBook Air (M2, 8GB, 512GB) I have to wait almost 2 minutes via Thunderbolt 4? On top of that, the films don't run smoothly at all. I tried a new cable (10Gb/s, USB-C-USB micro-B) to no avail to make sure it wasn't the multiport. Does anyone know what the problem is?

You had to make sure that all USB cables looked the same.
In such cases, you have to dispose of all the old USB cables.
A Thunderbolt connector needs a Thunderbolt USB Type C cable.
You can test the data transfer with ( Disk Speed Test).
