Question about Apple AirPods Pro (1st Gen.) MagSafe Case

I just got a new "Apple AirPods Pro 2021 (ANC)" today, but could not pair it with my iPhone (13 Pro) or iPad Pro. I'm already familar with the AirPod technology and used "Apple 2nd generation AirPods" for 1.5 years now. I was wondering if anyone else has this issue. Could it be the case that it is defect?

If the Airpods are charged, Bluetooth is on, and you followed the instructions from Apple in this document:

… and it still doesn’t work, then I‘d say it‘s a defect. You can always try with a friend‘s iPhone to make sure?
