I want to connect the dock to my MacBook Air and use it to connect my 34" monitor via HDMI. The whole thing works for about 10 seconds and then the monitor goes black. What is the reason for this or what am I doing wrong?

Is it possible that your monitor does not support 4k (UHD)? If so, you have bought the wrong adapter. This adapter cannot support 4k at 60hz. I suspect that this is your problem.
