Hi, I haven't tried it but I can guarantee you don't want to. Battlefield 1 is not trying to be a flight sim in the slightest. Such a joystick would be pure overkill and spontaneous switching between joystick and mouse and keyboard is tedious (when as an infantryman) and the joystick gets in the way.
Even if BF1 doesn't support the joystick it's still possible to get it to work with BF1 but the solution would be cumbersome and not ideal. (Worst case, for example, X-axis + = W button).

I tried it with BF4 back then and it's definitely not worth it.

No, unfortunately Battlefield 1 does not support the Wharthog.
