I would like to use my stereo system including two floor standing speakers for streaming by means of a Sonos port. Can I add Sonos speakers to the speakers powered by my stereo in the same room or will this distort the sound?

I was interested in your question, so I tried it out today.
with my system and ONE sonos play 1 (first generation) it worked well and without delay.

We have exactly this setup - it works well for us. Depending on the delay you get with your amplifier, there may be an audible delay (I would ask SONOS if you could adjust such behaviour manually; or if Sonos makes this adjustment automatically via the built-in microphone of the speakers).
