Is the Brother MFC-L3740CDWE capable of automatic double-sided scanning (duplex scanning) with automatic document feeder (ADF), i.e. without manually turning the sheets? If so, where is this documented? If so, does it require special software?

Yes, it can. A free software package can be downloaded from Brother and all functions are ready to use.
