Yes, it works without it. I have never plugged in the dongle. So far I haven't noticed any disadvantages in the Skypes, it works.

I have been using it for a while. It works, but then the automatic update in lync for business doesn't work. Bluetooth music transfer works with all Android tablets and mobile phones.
I always take the dongle with me.
