Is there an external USB adapter that supports the PCIe Gen 3.0 x4, NVMe interface? Before I insert the SSD into the motherboard, I first want to create a clone.

No, I've been looking for that for a while too. There are Nvme adapters with Thunderbolt that directly extend the PCI-E interface from the port, so to speak. But an adapter chip that converts the PCI-E signal of the Nvme to USB does not yet exist.
