My power bank makes loud noises when charging. It sounds as if carbon dioxide is escaping from a bottle of cola. This happens no matter which port I plug it into. Is this noise normal for this power bank or is there a defect?

My powerbank is completely silent.
I suspect a defective cell.
I would make a 5sec video clip and return/send the device with this info + description.

Caution, batteries can cause a fire. Noises indicate a danger. I would deposit the device safely and contact the supplier for further handling, as the postal route is now likely to be problematic.
