When making a call with the cordless telephone, can the call be listened to at the base station? Shouldn't be but would like to know before buying.

No. You can't. When you pick up the cordless phone, it shows on the base station that the line is busy. If you pick up the handset anyway, the "busy" sign appears. You can't hear anything.
