I have both and, to be honest, I almost only use the false warmer to defrost or warm up homemade porridge from these cups. Works great!

Yes, they can be put in the freezer without any problem. The shelf life depends on the food, 2-3 months should not be a problem. However, given the rate at which homemade jars are going, I doubt they will stay in the freezer that long. Note: sterilising in glass jars is also a good way to preserve food, I used to put them in a pressure cooker for 20 minutes.
Why don't you try turning it? They have a screw cap. :)
