I have both and, to be honest, I almost only use the false warmer to defrost or warm up homemade porridge from these cups. Works great!
I have written on them with Washi tape, painter's tape (masking tape) also works. I have not tried it directly.

Yes, they can be put in the freezer without any problem. The shelf life depends on the food, 2-3 months should not be a problem. However, given the rate at which homemade jars are going, I doubt they will stay in the freezer that long.
Note: sterilising in glass jars is also a good way to preserve food, I used to put them in a pressure cooker for 20 minutes.
Why don't you try turning it? They have a screw cap. :)
