Product details

The Swiss stained glass research of the 19th century provides important impulses for further studies in this field through the processing of the archive of the Zurich workshop. Zurich and Bern, the centers of local stained glass art, competed with workshops from southern Germany. Johann Jakob Röttinger from Nuremberg established the Zurich studio as the cradle of famous stained glass artists, thereby initiating the cultural transfer between Switzerland and his German homeland. The quality of the stained glass works, the professionalism of his management, and his personal charisma were the recipes for success that allowed the German immigrant to gain access to the Zurich educated class and thus to prestigious commissions. He was supported by his local wife, who, primarily committed to maternal duties, became a business partner and ensured the provision of household logistics for the family and staff. Artistically, Röttinger remained true to his Nuremberg roots and oriented himself as a late Nazarene to the taste of the time. Stylistically and iconographically, the stained glass works are exemplary of 19th-century sacred art, yet these characteristics had to yield to a rejecting reception by the end of the century. This volume includes artistic, biographical, and iconographic analyses, as well as the contextualization of the stained glass artist Johann Jakob Röttinger within a broader social, cultural, and economic context, thus providing insightful glimpses into the thinking of the era.
