The business lawyer Dr. Philip Nolten falls in love with the young physiotherapist Laura Meyer during a rehabilitation stay. After completing his treatment, he confesses his love to her and invites her to a dreamy Christmas vacation in Switzerland. He has long noticed that something makes her very sad, but she never talks about it. When he then proposes to her, she runs away. After a brief search, he finds her in the church, where she confesses her past to him in tears. Initially shocked, he helps her calm down. Despite everything, he loves her and does not want to give up on her. They both return to their professional lives but keep in close phone contact. A few weeks later, Philip has to travel to Detroit for business. Shortly after, she cuts off all contact and disappears without a trace.
