180 years ago, the First Danube Steamship Company was founded. The first steamer, Franz I, began service between Vienna and Budapest in 1830. The DDSG quickly developed into the largest inland shipping company in the world and the most traditional shipping line on the Danube. Franz Dosch, who rose from sailor to personnel director of the DDSG until his retirement in 1996, has selected over 200 mostly unpublished historical photographs from his personal collection. The impressive images illustrate Danube shipping from its beginnings to the privatization of the company, which began in 1991. The photos showcase the DDSG fleet, the training of sailors, daily work life, and celebrations on board and in the harbor. The first cruise ship was put into service in 1916.
