The second year of the war brought a multitude of operations on both sides. While the campaigns in Norway and the West defined the events, the interludes of English-French diplomacy, as well as the French-English brother war, added particular emphasis. Likewise, the Italian attack on Greece, the offensive in Africa, and the deployment of the fleet in the Mediterranean played significant roles. Romania and its oil, along with the secret war over the possession of the oil fields, also shaped this year. The expansion of the bombing campaign—from terrorist attacks to retaliatory strikes and counter-terrorism, the beginning of the "Battle of the Atlantic" with the first major wolfpack battles, and the "Night of the Long Knives" all contributed to the escalation that turned this war into a global conflagration.
