In five songs, five chapters, Gipi traverses a brief summer of anarchy in globalized Italy, which nearly culminates in catastrophe. But only nearly: Gipi, the visually powerful melancholic, has quietly evolved into a subtle reporter of the circumstances. Nothing is melodramatic on the pastel panels, and nothing is pretentious avant-garde. Sometimes the mood is elevated on splash pages, while at other times, the soundtrack of the story is driven forward in simple rectangular panels. All without an amplifier. The only thing the four boys still believe in is music. And fortunately, the comic does too: such watercolors rock.
