The Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) is a data infrastructure for researching demographic change. Individual and societal aging processes are among the central challenges of the 21st century. In 2000, the European Commission and the European Council jointly called for the establishment of a systematic and comprehensive data base for empirical aging research in Europe. This aims to identify the potentials of demographic change and to outline pathways for successful policies in aging, social issues, health, and the labor market. The Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), coordinated by the Mannheim Research Institute for Economics and Demographic Change (MEA University of Mannheim), has been funded since 2002 by the 5th, 6th, and 7th Framework Program of the European Commission.
