Born in 1881 in the German town of Wongrowitz, Max Gerson studied medicine at the universities of Breslau, Würzburg, Berlin, and Freiburg. As a young student, he suffered from severe migraine attacks that confined him to bed for several days every few weeks. Various doctors informed him that these were incurable, and he would have to live with them. Max Gerson was not satisfied with this answer. Even as a child, he had eagerly studied various natural phenomena and gathered valuable observations. He began to change his diet and discovered that he could manage his migraines solely through this adjustment. His patients also benefited from this new migraine diet. Gerson was astonished to observe that the diet could not only alleviate migraines but also cure the then-incurable tuberculosis. For the first time, he considered the possibility of strengthening immunity.
