How did "ordinary" Germans contribute to the Holocaust? In her book, Mary Fulbrook examines the role of district administrator Udo Klausa in Bedzinie, Upper Silesia, just 37 kilometers from Auschwitz. While Klausa, as the head of the civil administration, cannot be directly linked to acts of violence against Jews, he nonetheless caused suffering and, in his own way, created the conditions for genocide. Fulbrook's book offers a nuanced perspective on the "banality of evil" and addresses a neglected question: Until now, the focus has primarily been on those directly involved in mass murder and the desk perpetrators like Eichmann. But how was the Holocaust implemented or facilitated within the administration, how was the ghettoization carried out, and how did the head of the civil administration justify his involvement to himself and process that experience?.
