The Aarau train station was considered an outstanding building of national significance, yet it had to make way for a new construction. Built in 1856 by the renowned architect Jakob Friedrich Wanner of the Nordostbahn, the late Neoclassical structure experienced glorious times in one of the most beautiful train station squares in Switzerland. After being carefully enlarged twice, it underwent disrespectful renovations - and ultimately, the decision was made to replace the building, which had lost its original splendor, with a new one. This book documents, for the first time, the construction history of the station and the surrounding area from 1856 to 2011 with many new and historical photographs as well as original plans, and attempts to draw lessons for the handling of historical monuments. Professionals involved at the time discuss the decision for the replacement building, and a photo essay captures the character of the new station, designed by Theo Hotz, which opened in 2010.
