The Pan-American Highway is the queen of all dream roads. As a simple country road, multi-lane highway, treacherous gravel track, or cobblestone alley, it stretches from north to south through the American double continent, passing countless cities and villages as well as unique landscapes. It has many names: Pan-American Highway, Carretera Panamericana, or Interamericana, traversing 15 countries and various climate zones of the Earth. It brushes against ultra-modern high-tech societies and ancient indigenous cultures. It leads through green forests, cactus and rocky deserts, tundra, pampas, and rugged mountains with spewing volcanoes. The approximately 22,000-kilometer route begins at Prudhoe Bay on the Arctic Ocean, travels through Alaska, Canada, the USA, and continues into Central and South America. Only in Panama is the road interrupted for a short stretch by impenetrable jungle, resuming only in Colombia. In South America, it continues through the Andes heading south until it reaches Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world on Tierra del Fuego.
