After the annexation of Lithuania in 1941, Dalia Grinkeviciute is deported to Siberia by the Soviets along with her mother and brother. She spends her youth in exile in the Altai region and in the Arctic. At the age of 21, Grinkeviciute manages to escape. Back in Lithuania, she hurriedly writes down her memories of exile on loose sheets of paper and buries them in a jar in the garden out of fear of being discovered by the KGB. Shortly thereafter, she is arrested by the KGB and deported again. After her release, the memories remain lost, and it is not until after Dalia Grinkeviciute's death that the writings are miraculously found in 1991. The collection of loose sheets has become one of the most important documents in Lithuanian history, powerfully illustrating the fate of a 14-year-old girl in exile.
