Product details

With texts and image contributions from Barbara Ellmerer, Yves Netzhammer, Nils Röller, as well as illustrations from works by A.A., William Gilbert, Niccolò Cabeo, Athanasius Kircher, René Descartes, Emanuel Swedenborg, and others. The Journal for Art, Sex, and Mathematics examines in this book diagrams that explore the forces between normalization and deviation. The focus is on devices that format perceptions and inscribe themselves in the process of image finding from 1500 to 1800. This is guided, for example, by Descartes' vortex theory, the image machines constructed by Kircher, and model earths systematically probed by Gilbert with compass needles. The lines of the force field initially sprout discreetly like the whiskers of cats from stones or spread schematically in circles, then they follow fracture points on surfaces that generate magnetic forces.
