His bold prose experiments were immediately praised by contemporary critics; however, Paul Adler's work was later published only sporadically in anthologies and has still not received the attention it deserves. Recently, however, there has been an increasing number of voices recognizing Adler's unique linguistic artistry. His most important books, Elohim, Nämlich, and Die Zauberflöte, undoubtedly belong in a league with the most significant narrative experiments of modern German literature. They are on par with Benn's "Der Garten von Arles" and Kafka's "Beschreibung eines Kampfes" in terms of compositional sophistication, musicality, and suggestive sound magic. Rarely has there been such a radical break with conventional narrative laws, with orders of time and action, in order to do justice to the most intricate consciousness processes of the protagonists with the utmost linguistic virtuosity.
