Mifepristone is the active ingredient in the so-called abortion pill RU-486 (trade name: Mifegyne). Mifepristone is a progesterone receptor antagonist. It inhibits the action of the progestin progesterone, as it has a five times higher affinity for the receptors of this hormone. Furthermore, it blocks the receptors for glucocorticoids with a three times higher affinity compared to dexamethasone. The abortion pill should not be confused with the morning-after pill.
