Abu Abdallah asch-Schi'i was the most significant missionary of the Ismailis in North Africa, Ifriqiya, and the Maghreb. He was born in Kufa, Iraq (according to other sources in Sanaa) and worked in administration in Iraq before joining the teachings of the Ismailis. Initially, he preached under Ibn Hauschab in Yemen and Mecca, but was invited by pilgrims to the Maghreb.
