Abu Bakr Muhammad b. Zakariya ar-Razi, born around 864 in Ray near present-day Tehran, died in 925 in the same place. He was a prominent Persian physician, natural scientist, philosopher, and writer. He is also known as Al-Razi, Ar-Razi, Ibn Zakaria (Zakariya), or Latinized as Rhazes or Rasis. Initially, he was interested in music. It was only at the age of 30 that he began studying medicine during his first visit to Baghdad, where he later established a research institute at the behest of the Caliph.
