Achille Bonito Oliva (November 4, 1939, in Caggiano, Province of Salerno) is an Italian art historian, art critic, and author, and is considered one of the most renowned art theorists for contemporary art in Italy. He coined the term "Transavanguardia" at the end of the 1970s. Achille Bonito Oliva graduated in law in 1961; subsequently, he studied literature with a focus on poetics. In the mid-1960s, he became a member of the neo-avant-garde writers' association Gruppo 63. In 1967, he published the poetry collection "Made in Mater" and in 1968 "Fiction Poems." In 1968, he moved to Rome, where he distinguished himself in the following years as a commentator and critic in the field of contemporary art. In 1980, he published his highly regarded work.
