Berg attended the Anno-Gymnasium in Siegburg, where he graduated in 1984. He studied Business Informatics at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences and graduated in 1989 as a Diplom-Informatiker (FH). He then completed the European Potential Management Program at the private ESCP-EAP European School of Management in Berlin. Since February 2007, Achim Berg has been the Chairman of the Management Board of Microsoft Deutschland GmbH in Unterschleissheim and Area Vice President, Microsoft International. Previously, Berg worked for five years at Deutsche Telekom AG as a board member responsible for sales and service in the fixed-line division T-Com. There, he strategically realigned the sales and played a significant role in the rapid growth of the DSL business.
