After studying human medicine from 1978 to 1985 in Giessen, Michel became a research associate at the Institute for Medical Informatics at Justus Liebig University Giessen under the direction of Joachim Dudeck. He then earned his doctorate in medicine with the thesis "Development of an orthopedic diagnostic coding system within the clinical information system WING.".
