Achim Richter (born September 21, 1940, in Dresden) is a German nuclear physicist. He was a professor at the Institute of Nuclear Physics at the Technical University of Darmstadt starting in 1974 and became emeritus on September 30, 2008. Since November 1, 2008, he has been the director at the European Centre for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas in Trento, Italy. Richter was born as the son of the master builder Georg Edmund Richter and his wife Elsa, née Wenzel. In Dresden, he attended primary and secondary school, where he graduated in 1958 as the top student in his class. After his application to study physics at the Technical University of Dresden was rejected five times for political and ideological reasons, he fled to West Berlin in 1959 and then to the Federal Republic of Germany.
