Mullah Obaidullah Achund (Panjwai District of Kandahar Province) is a leading Afghan Taliban figure. He was arrested in February 2007. Achund, who served as Minister of Defense during the Taliban's rule, is considered one of the two closest confidants of Taliban leader Mullah Omar and was a member of the so-called Quetta Council of the Taliban. According to Taliban spokesman Abdul Latif Hakimi, who was arrested in 2005, Achund was one of only two individuals with direct access to Mullah Omar. He personally ordered attacks, such as the one on foreign aid services in March 2005.
