The field black cumin (Nigella arvensis) is an annual plant from the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae). Native to the Mediterranean region, this plant is considered a weed and ruderal plant in Central Europe. The genus name Nigella (Latin nigellus = black) refers to the black-colored seeds. The species name arvensis translates to "originating from the field." It is an annual herbaceous plant. The field black cumin forms an upright, branched stem that can reach heights of about 10-30 centimeters. The leaves are finely divided, with pointed lobes that are less than 1 mm wide.
