The pediatrician Erna Eckstein-Schlossmann (1895-1998), baptized as a Christian, learned late in life about her Jewish heritage. She was surrounded by prominent Jewish pediatricians from three generations: her father Arthur Schlossmann, her husband Albert Eckstein, and her son Herbert. Growing up in Germany, she and her family were in Turkish exile from 1935 to 1950, where she experienced her happiest years. Later, she lived in England, where she passed away at the age of 102, highly honored. The writings of Erna Eckstein-Schlossmann, published here for the first time in a selection, portray a dynamic woman who did not succumb to the Nazi state or the early death of her husband. Her memories serve as both a personal and historical testimony.
